Mother’s day in the mother city : Cape Town Edition

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and we’ve rounded up three of our favourite half day activities for Mothers day in Cape Town, to make your mom feel like a queen. Rather than a mere gift that will end up sitting somewhere, gathering dust, we believe in experiences. Two of them have been tried and tested by us: a spa and breakfast with beautiful views as well as the chance to run around in a magical rose garden.

You don’t have to wait for one particular day to spoil your loved ones, Mother’s Day can be any day of the year. For us the best times are when she least expects them. Hence, if you can’t book any of these at the moment, you should save them for a bit later.

La Vie En Rose

There is nothing more wonderful than a bouquet of roses, but what is even better is to be let loose in a rose garden with pruning scissors and a tapestry of roses swinging in the wind as far as the eye can see, luring you closer. It’s a ‘dangerous’ thing to let my mother (and me) lose with a bucket and scissors in a rose garden. We both adore flowers and thankfully they come at a reasonable price at Chart Rose farm in Wynberg. Pick as many as you like, and then pay by stem. At the moment, they are priced at R7 each.

Tip: As you enter the garden, you may be overwhelmed by the first section you see in front of you. Trust me, don’t spend too much time there; as most people, including us did not realise that the farm is much bigger than we anticipated, so move deeper in, as the best roses are left at the back.

Our total came to R210 for 30 roses with the most incredible scent.

Where can you find that in a shop? Shop roses normally smell like nothing! The scent of these filled the whole living room. In addition, this experience gives you the opportunity to choose your own roses, while literally stopping and smelling them along the view of the Table Mountain range.

You may wish to have brunch or lunch before picking your roses, as I would advise getting them into water as soon as possible. (I learned from my mom that if they look slightly wilted, place ice blocks with them. It worked for the ones we had, they kept for so, so long.)

Our recommendation is an early morning walk around Kirstenbosch, followed by brunch. Next, move over to Chart Rose Farm for a cup of coffee, followed by the exciting part of the day. There is no doubt this will put a massive smile on your mother’s face.

📍Address:

1A Klaasens Rd, Wynberg, Cape Town, 7800, South Africa

$ – Budget depends on the amount of roses you select and the brunch selection, but falls within a lower range for us.

(bonus- take her to Ludwig’s Roses  close to Stellenbosch, where she can buy her own rose bush to plant)

Become a winemaker (blender) for a day

Is your mom a wine enthusiast? Do you ever imagine yourself being an awesome winemaker? Well, here’s your chance. Middelvlei offers the chance to blend your own bottle and take it home.

This activity is designed to be enjoyed by two people, starting with an introduction, explanation, sample of wine, and then of course blending your own wine. You can also enjoy snoek pate, a Cape specialty, and potbrood that they serve. And if that is not enough, they do a daily braai lunch, which also includes a low carb and vegetarian menu. Or try their braaibroodjies and wine pairing.

Take note the Wine Blending experience only happens over weekends and booking is essential.

*We have not tried this experience ourselves yet.

📍Address:

Middelvlei Wine Estate, Flamingo St, Stellenbosch, 7600, South Africa

$$ – On the bit more pricier range, as the Wine Blending is R250 pp, the braaibroodjies and wine pairing R150 pp and the braai lunch R265 pp.

Winelands spa with view of the Table Mountain

Our last experience for Mothers day in Cape Town, start the morning with a buffet breakfast at Zevenwacht restaurant in the historical manor house, overlooking the dam and vineyards from the best seats outside (weather permitting). Either select their breakfast table menu or from their ala carte menu, our favourite, the soufflé pancakes with berry compote. Take the short drive up to Bakwena Day spa, what I like about them is the view over the vineyards down to Table mountain and the warm welcome you receive. Their afternoon half day spa treatment starts at 12pm. You may also opt for the morning half day starting at 8am, followed by lunch at Zevenwacht restaurant. And if you really want to indulge, do the full day package that includes a light breakfast and light lunch.

Complete the day by doing a wine tasting or even better a truffle chocolate and wine pairing

Another option during the summer months is a Zevenwacht picnic on the lawn.

📍Address:

Langverwacht Rd, Kuils River, Cape Town, 7579, South Africa

$$$ – Out of all three experiences, this is the most expensive, spa treatments prices depending on the package selected. But we loved the view and the food at Zevenwacht is just amazing.

Now like I mentioned we have done two of the three experiences and the other we planning on doing soon, so let me know below in the comments if you have done any of these experiences for Mothers day in Cape Town, would love to hear from you. I am sure your mom (and yourself) will absolutely enjoy them!
